Bowling Green Kentucky Judo Club is the premier Judo club in South Central Kentucky. Judo, a sport organized in Japan, has gained popularity since it became a part of the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Judo combines techniques of throwing, hold downs, choking and joint locks into a systematized sport that can be practiced safely at any age. The beginning student as well as the advanced can expect to learn Judo history, terminology, fundamental and advanced techniques of break falls, standing throws, hold downs, submission chokes, submission joint locks, counters and methods of practice.
Students will also be taught the belt ranking system and how to advance through the ranks. Judo is an excellent form of all around exercise that develops strength in body and mind, self-confidence, respect of others and the importance of trust. Through Judo practice students learn discipline and self-control and are provided with a meaningful way to channel their energies. Judo also teaches relatively easy to master techniques that have self-defense application. These techniques can be learned through practice and competition.
The Junior Judo belt ranks are broken down into white, yellow, orange, green, blue and purple belt colors(strips indicate the student is progressing toward the next belt color/rank). Senior belt colors are white, yellow, orange, green, brown and black.
Judo ranks are obtained by attending practice, competition and service to the sport. Judo students are also required to know the history of the sport and the techniques and terminology necessary for each rank. Students are tested on the techniques for each rank along with history and terminology. Time in grade within a rank is also part of the ranking system. Judo ranks don't come quickly. There is a difference between having a belt rank and earning a belt. We are proud of our reputation for not over promoting. Our team members are widely respected at competitions for their skill level at each rank. Many of our Judo team members are individual state, regional or national champions. Our Judo team has won the Team Trophy at the annual Kentucky State Judo Championships 12 times since our first win in 2000.
We welcome you to come and experience the fun and excitement of Judo. We offer classes for students both young and old. Judo is a great family sport and we welcome all who want to come and learn. Our program is a sports club at Bowling Green Parks and Recreation Fitness Center, 225 Third Street, Bowling Green, KY 42101.
